Germany ran riot in the 3rd/4th place playoff here in London as South Africa just ran out of steam. In truth, the result did not reflect the efforts of the Springboks who have worked hard and impressed many with their performances this week, in the end, it was probably a game too far and Germany punished them late on. Floortje Engels was the hero for her side, saving a penalty in the shoot out to secure a place in Sunday’s final for the Netherlands in a close-fought battle with South Africa.
The Dutch controlled the first half and raced into a two goal lead with goals from Kelly Jonker in the third minute, after she was allowed time and space to pick her spot in the South African D, and a blistering penalty corner from Martje Paumen in the tenth minute. Continue reading
