England ended their nightmare world cup campaign with a hard fought shootout win over Belgium to avoid the wooden spoon and take 11^th place. As has been the case so often in the shootout scenario, England’s hero was goalkeeper Maddie Hinch who saved from Alix Gerniers, Stephanie Vanden Borre and Stephanie De Groof before watching Lieselotte van Lindt’s effort go wide to give England the win. England finally picked up their first win of the competition with a hard-earned 3-1 win over a stubborn Germany side. The competition has been a disaster for Jason Lee and his players who had posted four successive defeats before today, but they got themselves over the line in this contest with goals from Hannah McLeod, Susie Gilbert and a blockbuster from Susannah Townsend.
