And so at 3pm on the 27th of June, the 16 athletes whom Great Britain Coach Jason Lee feels will bring home the gold medal were finally announced to the world. After 3 years of
working together in the central programme, whittling the whole squad of 27 athletes down to 16 plus two reserves was always going to prove difficult. It is a selection with a wealth of experience and one that contains no Scottish or Welsh players. Continue reading →

Superheroes don’t really exist outside of films or comic books. If they did, Abigail Walker would be a perfect candidate to be one: When the Canterbury and Great Britain goalkeeper isn’t keeping out shots from the best in the world, she’s saving lives in her day job as a surgeon.  The Top of the D was lucky enough to catch up with her during the recent Investec London Cup; I didn’t dare ask what her Kryptonite is, though. London 2012: Great Britain Ladies Squad Part 1.

This morning, having seen the team open the London Stock Exchange at 8am, the 16 athletes, plus the two reserves, tasked with capturing Olympic Gold in the women’s hockey competition were announced.

Having begun their centralised training programme back in 2009, Head Coach, Danny Kerry called the selection process “the most thorough and exhaustive ever.” Continue reading →
