With almost 100 international caps to her name and a series of eye-catching displays in
the Champions Trophy, Emily Maguire has made a starting berth in the Great Britain line up her own. The Reading and Scotland defender is composed defensively and a threat going forwards. She might not be mentioned in the same breath as Alex Danson or Helen Richardson, but Maguire is a key component in the side’s quest for gold. If they did, Abigail Walker would be a perfect candidate to be one: When the Canterbury and Great Britain goalkeeper isn’t keeping out shots from the best in the world, she’s saving lives in her day job as a surgeon. London 2012: Great Britain Ladies Squad Part 1.
This morning, having seen the team open the London Stock Exchange at 8am, the 16 athletes, plus the two reserves, tasked with capturing Olympic Gold in the women’s hockey competition were announced.
Having begun their centralised training programme back in 2009, Head Coach, Danny Kerry called the selection process “the most thorough and exhaustive ever.” Continue reading
