Women’s Premier Division Finals Day Two Roundup

Could Surbiton retain their title from last year or would Reading capture the crown and return to former glories? Who would take the third place out of Hampstead and Westminster and East Grinstead? Here’s a round up of what happened on day two of the Women’s Premier Division Finals.

Women’s Final: Reading 1-0 Surbiton.

Reading stunned Surbiton to take home the title for the first time since 2013 with an excellent display at the Nottingham Hockey Centre.

Emma Findlay’s rocket strike in the 25th minute was the difference between the two sides as Reading’s defensive doggedness and some good goalkeeping from Nikki Cochrane upset the odds and ensured the title would go to Sonning Lane.

The pattern of the game quickly emerged with Surbiton probing, looking for an opening and Reading keeping them at arm’s length, meaning chances were scarce early on. Reading’s penalty corner defence did well to run down a Giselle Ansley drag flick and then Cochrane got down well to save a straight strike from the same player. Darcy Bourne, who scored twice in Saturday’s semi-final was also thwarted by a smart stop from Cochrane as Surbiton piled on the pressure.

Findlay’s strike found the top corner a little against the run of play, but in truth it was a goal worthy of winning a final – which is what it proved to be.

In the third quarter Reading built up some good pressure as they sought to make the game safe, but Mia Moore’s shot went inches wide. At the other end, Erica Sanders was denied by some alert goalkeeping from Cochrane who was showing her quality on the big occasion.

With just 20 seconds on the clock, Anna-Rose Gabitass was given a yellow card and a penalty corner awarded for a reckless tackle. Ansley stepped up but once again it was Cochrane to the rescue as Reading saw off the threat and sealed the title.

Women’s Third Place Playoff: East Grinstead 3-2 Hampstead and Westminster

East Grinstead repeated their third place finish of twelve months ago with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Hampstead and Westminster.

With under 24 hours to put the disappointment of a semi-final defeat behind them the two teams came out fighting and put on a fiercely-contested and at times physical battle which the side from Sussex ultimately shaded.

Olivia Shannon put East Grinstead ahead in the seventh minute but the lead lasted just four minutes, Lucy Hyams levelled things up with her 11th goal of the season.

Tess Howard flashed a shot across the face of the Hampstead goal and then at the other end East Grinstead’s penalty corner defence came to the fore, coping well with a series of Hampstead penalty corners.

Millie Giglio’s deft finish gave East Grinstead the lead in the third quarter and Howard brought the best out of Miriam Pritchard in the Hampstead goal as the side from Saint Hill hunted for another goals. With eight minutes left to play, Rose Tynan reacted quickest to force in a penalty corner rebound and we were all square once again.

With thoughts turning to a shootout to decide the match there was enough time for one final twist: Biba Mills fired home a penalty corner five minutes from time to hand East Grinstead the win.
