Men’s Premier Division Finals Day Two Roundup

Could Old Georgians win the title for a fourth year in a row or would Surbiton break their dominance? Would it be Wimbledon or Oxted taking the third European place? Here’s what happened in the men’s final and third place play off.

Men’s Final: Old Georgians 1-2 Surbiton.

Surbiton destroyed Old Georgians’ hopes of winning four in a row with a 2-1 win in a fierce men’s final.

Goals from Jacob Payton and Struan Walker ensured a first domestic defeat of the season for Old Georgians and that the title went to Sugden Road.

George Pinner – playing his last game before retirement had already been called upon to save from Walker when Surbiton got their noses in front just before the end of the first quarter. Pinner blocked the shot at the near post but the ball broke to Payton who made no mistake with the finish to open the scoring.

Six minutes later it was all square. Tom Carson produced an outrageous finish to lob James Mazarelo and parity was restored.

The game was played at a frantic pace with both sides battling for control of the midfield and Georgians throwing people forwards in search of an equaliser.

Barry Middleton was on hand to clear a James Carson penalty corner off the line and a good strike from Phil Roper was expertly repelled by Mazarelo. Despite the build up of pressure from the champions it was Surbiton who were able to capitalise on their chance. Stuart Rushmere’s initial effort was pushed onto the post but Walker reacted quickest to fire home the rebound to make it 2-1.

Roper was kept out by Mazarelo once again, this time from a penalty corner and there was still time for Middleton to draw a save from Pinner as the game become more and more stretched. OGs final chance came the way of Tom Carson from a penalty corner but once again, Mazarelo was equal to the task, sparking wild celebrations from his team mates as they were confirmed as champions.

Oxted 0-0 Wimbledon (Wimbledon win 3-2 on shootout.)

Goalkeeper Ore Ogunlana was Wimbledon’s hero once again as they eventually overcame a stubborn Oxted in a shootout after a 0-0 draw in the 3rd/4th place play off.

Just as he did in last year’s 3rd place playoff, Ogunlana came up with three big saves to ensure Wimbledon took the last European place and broke Oxted hearts.

During normal time it was a real game of cat and mouse with Oxted sitting in and frustrating Wimbledon, hitting them on the break and going long to use the pace of Michael Roydon-Turner in the final third.

Oxted had some good chances to break the deadlock, Charlie Axford was unlucky to see his shot drift over the bar after a good piece of skill in the circle and Pete Jarvis stabbed a snapshot just wide from near the penalty spot.

At the other end Max Christopher did well to block from Evan Kimber and Oxted’s penalty corner defence did a fine job of keeping Wimbledon at bay.

Oxted were 2-0 up in the shootout after Christopher denied Wimbledon’s first two takers and Royden-Turner and Axford found the net. However Ed Horler scored after a penalty stroke was awarded and then Ogunlana – as he has done before, took centre stage, allowing Rory Patterson to step up and slot in the winner – booking Wimbledon’s place in Europe next season.
