Women’s Super Sixes: Brown guides East Grinstead to glory

A hat-trick from East Grinstead captain Chloe Brown helped East Grinstead to retain the Women’s Super Sixes title with a 6-3 victory over Surbiton.

Brown’s unerring accuracy from penalty corners – all three of her goals came from set pieces, gave the Sussex outfit the edge in a keenly-contested affair.

East Grinstead blew away Sutton Coldfield 8-1 in their semi final whilst Surbiton reached the final after a dramatic late equaliser took them to a 5-5 draw with Buckingham. Surbiton won 2-1 on shootout to set up the clash with East Grinstead.

It was Brown’s goal which broke the deadlock in the final but just a minute later Erica Sanders levelled it up with a penalty corner of her own. Surbiton nudged themselves into the lead after good work from Beckie Middleton set up Jordan Homann to finish. The lead lasted mere seconds, however as Biba Mills rounded the Surbiton goalkeeper to level it up immediately.

The advantage changed hands again, Brown bagged her second and then Summer Knight-Thompson produced a clever finish to make it 4-2 to East Grinstead.

Jemma Woods in goal for Surbiton kept her side in the contest with some outstanding goalkeeping – notably a fine double save from Great Britain star Ellie Rayer whilst in the other goal, Mila Welch pulled off a string of superb saves, denying Homann and Josefina Hippe with some fine goalkeeping. Both sides hunted for a crucial break through but when Surbiton did manage to beat Welch, Rosie Hope popped up on the line to clear brilliantly.

A neat move by Surbiton set up Hippe to make it 4-3 but Brown extinguished any hopes of a comeback as she completed her hat-trick, again from a penalty corner. Carlota Gomez put the game to bed with a late set piece to ensure the title would head back to Saint Hill once again.
