Men’s Super Sixes Final: Old Georgians take home the trophy once again

Old Georgians retained the Men’s Super Sixes title with a convincing 7-4 victory over Wimbledon.

In a repeat of last year’s final between the same two sides, OGs defence successfully suffocated Wimbledon and their array of attacking talent picked off the side from SW19 to take the the title once again.

Wimbledon destroyed Southgate 11-1 in their semi-final whilst Old Georgians saw off East Grinstead 8-4 to set up a clash of the top two teams in the league phase.

A double from Dan Shingles as well as a nicely taken finish from Chris Griffiths put OGs in the ascendancy at the half time break as they led 3-0.

Wimbledon had plenty of the ball and continued probing and looking for an opening but Georgians defended very well, restricting them to just two penalty corners – both well dealt with by George Pinner, and just a handful of half chances.

In the second half the pattern continued: OGs tight defence kept Wimbledon at bay whilst a well-worked penalty corner from Tom Carson extended the lead before Ed Carson guided in the fifth.

Griffiths bagged his second with a beautiful solo effort and it looked like the side from Surrey would run away with it. Wimbledon rallied though, and Antonio Sanz del Campo tipped in to make it 6-1 before Sam Hooper converted a penalty stroke and Liam Ansell made it 6-3 with eight minutes to play.

Pinner made a superb block to deny a Hooper penalty corner and then with the clock running down, Tom Carson capped the win with the seventh goal, ensuring the title went back to Surrey with Old Georgians for the second year in a row.
