A superb display from Theo Dowse’s East Grinstead side fired them to a 6-1 win over Surbiton and in the process captured the Women’s Super 6s title.
East Grinstead had overcome Slough in their semi-final, winning 3-2 whilst Surbiton had seen off the challenge of Buckingham, 4-1 to take their place in the showpiece game.
It was a clash of styles as East Grinstead’s fearless young guns took their energetic and fast-paced game up against Surbiton’s experienced heads.
David Beckett’s team went ahead early on through Ruth Gordon but East Grinstead immediately equalised with a goal from Laura Workman.
A rocket of a drag flick from an Amy Thompson penalty corner put East Grinstead ahead and then Biba Mills made it 3-1 from the penalty spot to the delight of the travelling East Grinstead fans.
The side from Saint Hill sensed an opening to put the game to bed and Laura Myers in the Surbiton goal made a splendid diving save to thwart Amy Thompson from a penalty corner and then right at the start of the second half, Myers did even better to get across goal to get a stick on a shot from Biba Mills after a fine piece of approach play from Chloe Brown.
Issy Field in the EG goal – who impressed in the semi-final, did a good job of keeping Surbiton at bay as they hunted for a way back into the game.
With six minutes to go, a lovely flick from Brown made it 4-1 and made it look like the trophy was heading to Sussex.
Field then turned a shot over the bar using a combination of her helmet and stick before Thompson, with time running out, put the icing on the cake with a sixth, and it was party time for the Side from Saint Hill.
Captain Chloe Brown told me post match: “There’s no other feeling like it, this is the best day of the year. We did really well as a team, we had set goals beforehand and we showed that we can keep going. We have great heart and spirit in our team from the young players right through the team. There are some really powerful superstars in our team, so watch out for them!”
