Toman and Townsend secure the points for Great Britain

Great Britain gained revenge for yesterday’s narrow defeat by Germany in the FIH Pro League, picking up a 2-0 win in the return contest on Thursday evening.

Goals from Anna Toman and Susannah Townsend ensured Mark Hager’s team registered their third win of their Pro League campaign.

After a goalless first quarter, Germany were put under pressure with Great Britain winning a seemingly endless string of consecutive penalty corners. The defence had done a good job of seeing them off but eventually Toman’s deflected shot deceived Nathalie Kubalski and found the corner.

On the stroke of half time, another deflected shot, this time from Townsend doubled the lead for the hosts.

Germany enjoyed a good spell of possession in the third quarter but the clearest chance of the period fell to Sarah Evans, who drew an excellent save from Kubalski, low to her left.

Germany continued to dominate the ball, but found clear chances hard to come by. Maddie Hinch in the Great Britain goal was not troubled during the third quarter.

Evans tested Kubalski’s reactions at the start of the fourth quarter with a backhand which stung the goalkeeper’s left glove.

At the other end Hinch produced two solid saves to preserve the two-goal cushion and Great Britain were able to run the clock down to seal the win.

Player of the match Evans told BT Sport after the match:

“Today was much better, it’s great for us to get the win.”

“We played on the front foot much more today. We were more aggressive and able to win the ball high up the pitch and cause them more problems than we did yesterday.

“It’s brilliant to be able to play these games. We’re building some good momentum and stepping up each time. We need to keep on improving and keep on building.”

Great Britain’s next match is on 22 May against USA.
